PRINCESS CHIAJNA AT ALEPPO

Summary/Abstract: Leonhard Rauwolf, a German botanist and physician who visited Syria and the Holy Land in 1573, has told in the account of his travels how he met in Aleppo the former princess of Wallachia. Her eldest son, Peter the Young, had died in 1568, as soon as he had been sent into exile. His brothers, Radu and Mircea, were living together with their mother. She was, according to this witness, “a very discreet woman, and well skill’d in the Turkish and Arabian languages”. They had to exist in a political framework dominated by the Ottoman sultan.
