Summary/Abstract: The outcome of the November 30th, 2008 parliamentary elections sets forth the need to reflect upon the cultural dilemmas and political shortcomings of modern and contemporary Romanian social democracy. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Mircea Geoană, the only social democratic political party in present-day Romania, member of the Socialist International and of the Party of European Socialists, traces its intellectual and political origins back to the pre-communist social democracy, despite harsh criticism in local and European mass-media that presents the SDP as the party of the ex-communists. Given this state of affairs, this article argues that the Romanian social democracy, specifically the SDP, needs to overcome its identity problems in orther to play a decisive role on the Romanian and European political scene. The support granted to the SDP by the European socialist leaders, manifest during the last parliamentary elections, might mediate this process.
