Rhomboidal amphorae found at Isaccea–Noviodunum

Summary/Abstract: The article presents a series of less known amphorae from the site at Isaccea–Noviodunum, dated to the 13th-14th c. The large rhomboidal amphorae, also known as „Trapezunt amphorae” are a special category, different from the better known types – spheroid amphorae and piriform amphorae. This type is very common in the Russian settlements at the north of the Black Sea, on Don River and Dnieper River, in Moldova between Prut and Dniester Rivers. It is also documented in Bulgaria, at Nessebar. The fortress from Isaccea-Noviodunum was directly involved in the commerce in the region, as it was located at the meeting point between Europe and the Oriental world, in an area where the big continental and sea trade routes passed. The presence of large amphorae in the site at Isaccea–Noviodunum shows how certain types of goods travelled between the Black Sea centers in the 13th-14th c. Rezumat: Articolul prezintă o categorie de amfore, puţin cunoscută, descoperite în situl Isaccea-Noviodunum, în contextele datate în sec. XIII-XIV. Amforele romboidale, de mari dimensiuni, cunoscute şi sub denumirea de „amfore de Trapezunt” sunt o categorie aparte, diferită de tipurile mai cunoscute - sferoidale şi piriforme. Acest tip este foarte răspândit în aşezările ruseşti din nordul Mării Negre, pe Don şi pe Nipru, în Moldova dintre Prut şi Nistru, fiind documentat şi în Bulgaria la Nessebăr. Cetatea de la Isaccea-Noviodunum, a fost direct implicată în comerţul ce se desfăşura în regiune, beneficiind de aşezarea în punctul de întâlnire dintre Europa şi lumea orientală, într-o zonă unde ajungeau marile drumuri ale comerţului continental şi maritim. Prezenţa în situl de la Isaccea-Noviodunum, a amforelor cu profil romboidal ilustrează traseul şi circulaţia unor categorii de mărfuri între centrele din Marea Neagră în sec. XIII-XIV.
