Summary/Abstract: The building of the foundations of a new house fixes and proclaims the accomplishment of the transition from unbuilt to built space through practical and ritual actions, involved in which are also the master-builders. This is a threshold point in the modelling and semantization of space, and hence, in the reaffirmation of its social and sign organization. What is more, the laying of the foundations marks the initial stage in building one's own home, whose possеssion determines the status of man as the "bulwark" of the house and the family. It is not a matter of a static position here, for man in traditional society has been the mobile element. This is rather a sign of "man's" activities, qualities, and a mandatory status rule of proving his capabilities. The building of the house is a trial, while its possession its possession is likewise a value, which by and large also determines the other hierarchical level of man's social status as "the head" of the family.
