Summary/Abstract: The article is focused on the main West German political parties in the postwar period. According to Jean Blondel, there are only 4 stabile configurations of party systems in democratic countries. The German case is the most relevant for the “two and a half parties” system. This kind of party system does also exist in Canada, Belgium and Ireland. However, between 1969 and 1987 the German system was a perfect “two-party” system.
