Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the concept of arbitrariness in a comparative way. It focuses on Roman Jacobson's critique of de Saussure’s basic semiological principle, especially from the viewpoint of internal/external motivation (Käse-fromage argument) and diagrammaticality. It attempts to point out not only Jacobson's simplified understanding of arbitrariness but also the broader issue of replacing the langue – parole dichotomy by the new (code – communication) dichotomy.
