Summary/Abstract: The author compares two stagings of grand operas by Richard Wagner based on the Old Germanic Nibelung saga that have been directed by Frank Castorf – the Berlin production from 1995 and the latest, produced for this year's Bayreuth Festival, which marked the 200th Anniversary of the composer's birth. Łada-Zielke mainly focuses on how the different productions were received and considers what shocked (or failed to shock) German audiences and why.
