Summary/Abstract: A review of the opera Tannhäuser and the Warburg Singing Tournament, directed by Sebastian Baumgarten (premiere: 25 July 2011, Richard Wagner Festspiele, Bayreuth). The reviewer believes that the director was inspired by Nietzsche’s philosophy in this staging of Richard Wagner’s opera – primarily his concept of the two dimensions of art: Dionysian and Apollonian. Baumgarten strips Wagner’s work of its medieval setting. The Apollonian side is shown through a three-level installation recalling a factory hall, while Venus’s Kingdom, representing the Dionysian sphere, is set in the subterranean part of the space.
