Summary/Abstract: The voice announced the Word. John the Baptist in Luke 1, 5-25. Saint John the Baptizer is a key figure in the history of salvation, representing an important moment in this history. Each calling or vocation is defined in relationship with God’s plan and it epitomizes the part that the human subject plays in the fulfilment of this plan. Thus, each vocation has a historical meaning; it has something unique which indicates a personal duty. In precise historical moments, God called people who have funded new times and époques; in this case, the calling or the vocation is meant to be an example. It is what has happened in the case of Abraham’s calling – in the case of the man whom God called from the gentile world to originate a new people. It has also been the case of Moses – the man to whom God revealed Himself through the Burning Bush under a new name - moment that marked a new stage in the divine relationship. Saint John the Baptizer is part of the same category. And not only is he situated in the same category, but he is the one that reaches the top of this category by reaching fulfilment. In him we see once more all the stages of the preparations, of the covenants which had been marked by the succession of the patriarchs and Biblical prophets’ vocation. He is the last in this long line, as Jesus has said: “For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John” (Matthew 11: 13). Indeed, from that moment on, a new world that was the fulfilment of all the prophecies until John’s time began and he himself prophesied the coming of the divine Grace in the Embodiment of the Word of God. And, thus, the “voice” announced the “Word” by saying: “Look, the Lamb of God!” (John 1: 36).
