Summary/Abstract: Martha Nussbaum caused strong debate on patriotism and cosmopolitism among intellectuals that lasts almost 20 years, at the West. She believes that highlighting of patriotic pride is dangerous if one wants to reach moral ideals of justice and equality. Better way of getting to this point is cherishing the ideal of cosmopolitan, a person that is attached to the community of all human beings. Reminding us of antique role models, Diogenes of Sinope, that, by declaring him self as the citizen of the world, refused to be defined by his local origin and group affiliation, referred on universal aspiration and attachments, Stoics, who thought that we shouldn’t allow that differences in class, ethnic group or sex make borders among us and other people, Nussbaum defends thesis that one shouldn’t agree on the idea of national borders as moral borders. This paper aims to show the essence of the position of M. Nussbaum, several typical critics of her cosmopolitan point of view and her response to these critics. Beside that, the author presents objection on the attitude that the borders of moral concern should match the borders of humankind.
