THE EMERGENCE OF THE IDEA OF COSMOPOLITANISM: COSMOPOLITANISM OF DIOGENES OF SINOPE

Summary/Abstract: Diogenes of Sinope probably coined the word ‘’cosmopolitan’’, but most experts believe that his cosmopolitanism is negative, that means not belonging to any community, that does not imply the brotherhood of all men, or the establishment of a world state. In this article, the author wants to show that Diogenes’ cosmopolitanism contains both negative and positive aspects, and that it should be understood in the context of his general philosophical position on the revaluation of values .
