Summary/Abstract: Literature has always been used as a political instrument. The article analyses the problem raised by South African writers in the 21st century: Should literature be used by politics? The question should also be: Should literature use politics? I have offered some possible answers as I have given examples from some novels belonging both to the apartheid and the post/apartheid period written by Nadine Gordimer şi J. M. Coetzee. Moreover, I have underlined some of the new trends in South African literature.
