Summary/Abstract: The article analyses development of personal competence of the 1st grade gymnasium schoolboys employing physical self-education process. It is discussed on the basis of democratic ideas, Primary and Basic Education General Programs (2008) and associated with the holistic physical education and personal physical education values and objectives grounding gymnasium schoolboys’ performance. Strategy of General Education contents formation, evaluation, updating and implementation, (2007) notes a weak link of the education curriculum with real life, new competencies needed to be developed in modern society and, what is more, pupils’ learning styles and needs variety is not taken into consideration sufficiently. Therefore, not coincidentally, a great importance of a general and physical education curriculum reform still remains relevant. Research results revealed that gymnasium schoolboys employing content and process of physical self-education based on self-determination theory, achievement goal theory and constructivist theory, ideas of democracy, develop meaningfully their personal competence during the physical education lessons and leisure activities. Consequently, science and direction based development of a personal competence with the assistance of physical self-education process is an obviously crucial educational phenomenon with the purpose to frame for an independent responsible life following novel challenges, opportunities and constant perfection process.
