Turkey - EU Prudent but Determined Partnership

Summary/Abstract: Membership in the EU is seen by many in Turkey as the culmination of the reform efforts, a natural end of the road taken since the establishment of the Republic. Since the Helsinki Council at the end of 1999 where Turkey was accorded candidate status on the basis of the same criteria applied to other candidate states, these efforts have been accelerated. Turkey has time and again demonstrated its determination. It is now the turn of the EU members not to hesitate.
