Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the versified biography of Antun Mandić, the Bishop of Đakovo, which was written and published in 1823 in Pécs by Adam Filipović. The Life of Antun Mandić (Život Antuna Mandića) is heterogeneous by content and, apart from the data about the Bishop’s life, includes also moral lessons, notes about the reception of literary texts, and sometimes the data about the author as well. Filipović’s approach and his treatment of the subject expanded the boundaries of the genre and the epic is particularly important because of its attitude about knowledge as the prerequisite for human progress. This enlightenment-rationalist component, including the promotion of equality of all people, the desire to be truthful, objective and critical in the presentation of Mandić’s life, and the attempt to outline the social context, makes Filipović’s biographic epic interesting in literary, historical and culturological sense.
