Summary/Abstract: In this contribution various fields of problems in Southeast Europe facing the EU enlargement are discussed, as well as the problems and possible reactions following from it. At first, the dilemma of a step-by-step integration of particular Southeast European countries into the EU are addressed, which – although it necessarily has to take this course – still can create new problematic exclusions at the same time. Then the problems of the change of institutions are discussed, especially in view of a still little consolidated institutional collective system. A third field of problem is created by the new and probably increasing social differentiations in and between certain European societies that will confront sociologists in particular with new research tasks. Finally, the question of forming a common European identity is discussed, facing the nationalist ways of thinking and nationalist-oriented political trends that still quite clearly appear especially in Southeast Europe.
