Summary/Abstract: Zsuzsa Radnóti’s comprehensive study presents the play-writing oeuvre (which the author himself considers to have ended) of László Márton, one of the most important authors of contemporary Hungarian literature in its completeness. After studying the literary adaptations (the prose works by Elek Gozsdu, Tibor Déry, György Spiró, Prosper Mérimée) following the dadaistic-surrealistic one-act plays, she reviews Márton’s monumental historical drama-trilogy, The ambitious as a remarkable achievement of contemporary Hungarian play-literature, contrasting it at the same time with today’s theatrical form of expression which is less susceptible to renewal.
