Summary/Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increasingly visible trend towards deeper citizen participation in public life. Both the discourse and the practice of applying participatory tools have evolved significantly. Within this context, the concept of participatory governance has gained particular importance, focusing on the broad inclusion of citizens in governance processes. However, the full implementation of this concept is associated with numerous challenges. The aim of this article is to identify the main set of problems encountered in the implementation of this idea in Poland. The research indicates that the most common challenges include, among others, legal and formal limitations, difficulties related to sharing power, the dependency of the process on local leaders, the exclusion of citizens in decision-making on matters of significant importance, and the privileging of experts and officials.
