Summary/Abstract: In the tradition of ancient philosophy, fearlessness before death served as the ultimate criterion of a true philosopher – an ideal paradigmatically personified by Socrates in Plato’s Phaedo. This paper examines how the same archetype was appropriated and transformed in early Christian literature through the figures of Macrina the Younger, as portrayed by Gregory of Nyssa in the Vita Sanctae Macrinae and De anima et resurrectione, and Monica, as depicted by Augustine in the Confessiones and De ordine. Both women are presented as true philosophers who surpass even the Greek ideal in their mastery of the passions and their serene readiness for death. The paper argues that the striking parallels between these two portraits are not coincidental but derive from a common literary and theological source: the figure of the mother of the seven sons in 4 Maccabees, whose fearless endurance of her children’s martyrdom, governed by pious reason, provided the archetype for the Christian woman philosopher. By tracing this genealogy—from the Platonic ideal of meletē thanatou, to the Stoic-Jewish martyrological tradition, to the patristic portraits of Macrina and Monica—the paper demonstrates how the Church Fathers employed female figures to show that the uppermost philosophical ideal could be realized more fully through Christian faith and the hope of resurrection than through pagan learning alone.
