Summary/Abstract: This article reflects on the methodological specificity of patrology-patristic which, as demonstrated in the study, constitutes a methodical, systematized, logical, internally coherent discipline possessing both a material and a formal object of research. It is a theological discipline which, together with biblical studies and Church history, belongs to the field of positive theology, also referred to as the theology of fact or the theology of the sign. The direct subject of investigation in positive theology consists of concrete historical, cultural, and theological facts, and its task is to discover, describe, and determine their meaning, which can be fully understood only in reference to God. The article presents the fundamental methodological assumptions of patrology-patristics and indicates the research methods applied within this discipline. Due to its historical and contemporary conditions as well as its place within theological sciences, patrology-patristics employs methods proper to historical research and theological methods, especially those of biblical theology and dogmatics theology. The most frequently used method in this discipline is the historical-critical method which, when combined with the application of hermeneutical tools, appears to be the most appropriate approach.
