Summary/Abstract: The Rule for Monks composed by St Ferreolus, originating from the Gallic monastic milieu and dedicated to Bishop Lucretius, was written in the sixth century. Its author, Ferreolus (Ferriolus), bishop of Ucetinus – present-day Uzès in Languedoc – demonstrates notable erudition throughout the text. The Rule exhibits clear influences from the works of St Basil the Great, St Jerome, and Salvian, as well as elements of the Western monastic legislative tradition associated with St Caesarius of Arles, Aurelian, and the Tarnatan community. In the sections concerning the office of the abbot, one can also discern parallels with the Rule of St Benedict, the Rule of the Master, the Rule of St Augustine, and the Eastern Rule. It should be emphasized, however, that Ferreolus employed these sources with considerable discretion, maintaining significant independence in formulating his own prescriptions, particularly those pertaining to the role and responsibilities of the abbot. In this study, the requirements imposed on the abbot are presented in a systematic order and subjected to analysis. The text of the Rule contains detailed guidelines concerning the exercise of both spiritual and administrative authority, and also emphasizes the duty to maintain order and discipline within the community. According to its provisions, the abbot should demonstrate responsibility and serve as a moral example for the monks entrusted to him.
