Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the evolution of the office of head of state in the period following the restoration of independence, up to 1990, i.e. the fall of communism in Poland. The most important normative acts regulating this subject are presented, e.g. the principles of the March and April Constitutions, followed by a description of the function of the Council of State in the Polish People's Republic. The study concludes with an account of the first statutory norms in force after 1989 regulating the powers and competences of the president, together with a summary containing the most important conclusions. In addition to examining individual legal provisions, the text also includes historical and political background that further illustrates why particular solutions were introduced.
