Summary/Abstract: Adolescents (under the age of 18) possess a characteristically complex personality structure typical for their age, which is still in the process of development. The peculiarities of juvenile psychology require a specific approach when imposing and executing the punishment of “deprivation of liberty”, which introduces new moral and legal standards for this type of sanction. Such standards have been established in European Union law – including the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, Recommendation Rec(2008)11 of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, among others. The professional training of staff in correctional facilities is also of great importance. Their role is a key factor in the effective implementation of penal measures and in achieving positive outcomes.
