Summary/Abstract: Currently, the leading role in the spatial planning system is fulfilled by the municipality (gmina)—the basic unit of the Polish local administrative division. As a local government unit, it has a wide range of autonomy in this regard, formally referred to as the planning authority. However, spatial planning matters were regulated differently during the authoritarian period of 1945–1989. At that time, spatial planning corresponded to the requirements of the centrally planned state and was also closely linked to its economic planning. This paper aims to present the spatial planning system of the People’s Republic of Poland, while comparing it with key legal solutions utilised today.
