Summary/Abstract: Generative AI relies on machine learning models trained on vast corpora of text available on the Internet. However, these corpora are highly linguistically unbalanced. Dominant languages, such as English, Chinese, or Spanish, occupy a very significant place within them, while languages with more limited reach have much smaller data volumes. This asymmetry raises a central question: what are the effects of the rise of generative artificial intelligence on smaller media and linguistic spaces? In small linguistic spaces, generative artificial intelligence can reproduce representations constructed in other cultural contexts, promote linguistic standardization influenced by dominant languages, and contribute to the relative marginalization of local media productions. These phenomena can also alter the balance between national production and the international circulation of information.
