Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the cruises undertaken by members of the Romanian royal family along the Danube between 1902 and 1914, showing how these journeys combined ceremony and statecraft. Drawing on press reports, personal memoirs, archival sources, photographs, and film footage, it traces how the voyages transformed the Danube into a symbolic artery of national unity and identity. Through public rituals, official inspections, and direct encounters with local communities, the monarchy performed its dual role as guardian of territorial cohesion and promoter of economic and infrastructural progress. The paper also highlights the intimate perspective offered by Queen Elisabeta’s writings, which reimagined these state voyages as deeply personal meditations on memory and dynastic duty.
