Summary/Abstract: The article presents aspects of the work of the British viceconsul in Constanța (Kustendjie), Frank Fremoult Sankey, in the first year after his appointment. In a period of sustained development for the port of Dobrogea, immediately after the completion of the Danube–Black Sea railway, Sankey attempted to assert his authority over a large and somewhat obedient community of British subjects. The text is based on a number of unpublished documents held in British archives, eight of which are reproduced in the appendix, and which contribute to a better understanding of the history of Constanța in the early 1860s.
