Summary/Abstract: The article is а comparative analysis of the principle of victim in the process of strengthening the national communities. It focuses on Italian and SerЬian national communities between the two world wars, where the case of Italy served as а model to the Serbian one. Further on, in led to the appearance ofa number ofvisiЫe similarities in development of the SerЬian and Italian state during 19th and 20th centuries. Ceremonies connected to the cult of the fallen soldiers, as well as their sacralised, while the body events of war became the means of the strongest propaganda of the new ideology. Promoting "laymen religion" of nationalism and patriotism, the state elite managed to augment the mass of the "believers" ready for self-sacrifice for survival of the nation. Thus, paradoxically, all national communities that saw themselves as unique and unrepeatable phenomena were based on the same ideological presumptions. Serbian situation was specific, because the foundation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovens led not to formation of а nation state, but to an unsolvable dilemma: to accept double identities or to make а new nation? It resulted in decades of political instability.
