Summary/Abstract: Identity-related issues constitute a constant presence in Daniel Pennac’s fictional universe. From childhood to adulthood, the characters -as well as the author-narrator himself -continually seek to withstand life’s adversities and to give meaning to their lived experiences. Imagination, dreams, and fiction ensure the coherence of self-narrative: they render reality bearable by reinventing it through the imagination. Fiction, in turn, draws nourishment from the novelistic details of reality. This study is based on a textual analysis of Daniel Pennac’s novel “Messieurs les enfants”.
