Summary/Abstract: This article examines the formative role of translators of religious texts, spiritual works and Orthodox Christian theology, who contribute to the instruction and education of their readers, not only in the target language but also in the source language. To form and educate means to act and influence, to build knowledge, to shape it, to contribute actively to its enrichment, and to make it encyclopedic within the field of translation. The article also shows that, through their translation choices and strategies, these translators help to enrich their readers’ knowledge of Christianity, even encouraging them to seek out equivalent terms in the source language and to make them their own. At the same time, through their translation choices – particularly regarding the proper names of saints―they establish themselves as normative references for the use of the hagiographical equivalents they propose. We will thus demonstrate that translation also constitutes a formative and instructive process, providing cultural and encyclopedic education for readers of the translated texts, as well as serving as a mediation and mediation of cultures, an invitation to discover the world of the source text in the target language that receives it. This process also involves a normative dimension, which is highly significant in terms of vocabulary, style and terminology, even today, in the age of AI. Consequently, the (bio)translator’s normative role goes hand in hand with their role as a trainer and educator. We will demonstrate, with examples, that in the field of Orthodox Christian theology and spirituality, AI – whose main strengths are ease, speed and practicality – is not particularly adept at producing accurate and rigorous translations.
