Inflow of Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Development in Poland

Summary/Abstract: With progressing globalization, increasing attention is attached in theories of economic growth to relationships with the world economy and to the impact there of on economic growth and development in particular countries. One of the elements involved is the international capital flow in the form of direct foreign investment (FDI). The effects of FDI inflows on economic growth are measurable, but the particular impact of this factor on economic development is difficult to verify empirically. The purpose of this research has been to evaluate the current development of the Polish economy in the context of foreign direct investment. The analysis is based on the identification of subsequent stages in the economic development according to the investment-development pathway, including the assessment of changes in the inflow of FDI, changes in receivables and liabilities due to FDI and their relationships to the GDP, changes in the motivation underlying FDI projects and changes in the structure of investment and their of technological advancement. Our analysis covered the years 1994–2012. Data from the UNCTAD, the National Bank of Poland, and the Central Statistical Office were analyzed. Having identified the FDI stages, it can be concluded that at present Poland is in the early third stage. Transition from the first to the second stage occurred relatively rapidly but progress through the subsequent stages will require a much longer time and the effects are difficult to estimate.
