Summary/Abstract: The National Museum of Romanian Literature in Chișinău was founded in 1965. Its first director and the institution’s actual founder was the young literary and theater critic Gheorghe Cincilei, who studied philology at what is now “Alecu Russo” State University of Bălți. Beginning in his student years, and especially during his tenure first as director of what is now the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and later as director of the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Republican Museum of Literature, he came under suspicion and was subsequently accused of nationalism. Throughout the Soviet period, he continued to bear this “stigma”. The article highlights the key stages of Gheorghe Cincilei’s career, demonstrating how his work, both implicitly and explicitly, contributed to the continuity of the Romanian cultural tradition in the Moldavian SSR (1960–1989).
