Brown bear in the legal system of the Slovak Republic – monitoring, protection, responsibility

Summary/Abstract: The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a protected animal species under Act No. 543/2002 Coll. on Nature and Landscape Protection. The level of protection of this species directly affects the existence of state liability for damage caused by its activity. In our contribution, we will address the legal regulation of the status of the brown bear, its activity and the level of protection. We base our analysis not only on the legal regulations of the Slovak Republic but also on sources of international and European law. The reason for choosing this topic is the current issues of legal and factual protection of the brown bear in the territory of the Slovak Republic, which have become the subject of not only professional but (unfortunately) also political discourse.
