Summary/Abstract: When talking about prayer and obedience, our attention is primarily directed to monks, whose spiritual life is characterized by a rhythmicity of prayer and work. The Hesychast saints Symeon the New Theologian, Gregory Palamas, and Paisios of Neamț, who are being commemorated by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church this year, are just a few exemplary figures that emphasize the outcome of unceasing prayer in the life of a Christian. Thus, through unceasing prayer and through the exemplary fulfillment of the three vows, the monk’s desire to perfect himself through a continuous spiritual ascension in communion with God, through the illumination of the soul and the sanctification of his own life, is accentuated. However, Christ the Redeemer did not lay the foundations of two different Christian spiritualities: a strict one for monks and a more permissive one for ordinary family people. Both a virtuous family life and the monastic life are founded on the commandment of unconditioned love towards God andpeople, and together they make up the environment of human completion, altars of sacrifice and schools of asceticism and prayer.
