Summary/Abstract: During the 1960s and 1970s, when, following Belgrade and Zagreb, Sarajevo was also designated as a linguistic center, through the adoption of documents on language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the establishment of the Institute for Language, a practical shift was made away from the Novi Sad Agreement. This shift was reflected in a new institutional approach to language policy and an organized, programmatic approach to contemporary linguistic research, which laid the foundational trends in the development of modern Bosnian linguistic studies and the standardization of the Bosnian language. Starting from the premise that the establishment of the Institute for Language in Sarajevo in 1972 laid the foundation for an institutional approach to language policy and more recent linguistic research in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an emphasized Bosnian orientation, this paper analyzes several key positions expressed in documents on language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina both prior to and following the founding of the Institute. This development marked an official departure from the principles underlying the Novi Sad Agreement on the then common language. The first major debates were initiated at the Congress of Yugoslav Slavists in Sarajevo in 1965. Subsequently, in 1967, with the “Declaration on the Name and Status of the Croatian Literary Language” from the Croatian side and the “Proposal for Consideration” from the Serbian side, a significant split began to emerge within the previously unified Yugoslav language policy based on the principles of the Novi Sad Agreement. Of particular importance for the course of language policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the narrative about the Bosnian language was a survey by the editorial staff of the magazine “Život” published by the Writers’ Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, entitled “Tradition, Theory and Current Practice in the Application of the Literary Language in Bosnia and Herzegovina” from March 1970. The results of this survey significantly influenced the adoption of the official document “The Literary Language and Language Policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina” in 1971, which laid the foundations for a modern Bosnian language policy and set the course for the contemporary standardization of the Bosnian language.
