Summary/Abstract: Linguistic variation is one of the fundamental characteristics of natural languages, reflecting the geographical, social and cultural diversity of the communities of speakers. Dialects constitute authentic expressions of this variation and play an essential role in the preservation of cultural heritage and in the construction of collective identity. The article analyzes the relationship between linguistic variation and cultural identity, highlighting the main types of dialects and their functions in the contemporary context. Theoretical perspectives from sociolinguistics and dialectology are presented, as well as examples from the Romanian and European space that demonstrate that dialects do not represent “inferior” forms of the standard language, but legitimate varieties, resulting from historical evolution and from the adaptation of the language to different social and geographical contexts. In the context of globalization and increased mobility, the preservation of dialects acquires particular importance for the protection of cultural and linguistic diversity.
