Summary/Abstract: Scientific language is, by definition, a system of signs that strives for absolute precision. In mineralogy, as in other exact sciences, terminological unity is essential for communication between specialists. However, polysemanticism - the ability of a term to carry more than one meaning - persists as an inevitable linguistic phenomenon, being the result of the evolution of knowledge and conceptual borrowings. Although the scientific ideal aims for biunivocality (a single term for a single concept), the historical evolution of mineralogy and the intersection with other earth sciences generate phenomena of polysemy that require rigorous management by defining the context.Polysemy, although often considered a false homonymy or a linguistic accident from the traditional perspective of internal (prescriptive) terminologies, gained legitimacy and experienced conceptual development with the affirmation of external (descriptive) terminology.
