Summary/Abstract: Mineralogy, the branch of geology which studies minerals, uses a vast terminology reflecting not only the physical and chemical properties of minerals, but also the history of scientific language. The etymology of mineralogical terms reveals the cultural, linguistic and geographical influences which have contributed to the development of the specific vocabulary of this science. The terms used in mineralogy have different origins, most of them coming from Greek, Latin, German, Arabic, and also from geographical names or from the names of those who discovered a particular mineral. The etymology of mineralogy terms provides an interesting window into the history of science and language. An important aspect of this terminology is multiple etymology, a linguistic phenomenon by which a term entered the Romanian language via several linguistic channels.
