Summary/Abstract: The Romanian society is marred by a state of confusion generated by the aggressive substitution of true values by non-values. In the field of historical studies and public debates, a pseudo-scientific protochronistic trend is promoted especially by dilettantes and influences the less cultivated public. Based on unprofessional interpretations of ancient sources and archaeological discoveries, Romanian protochronists exaggerate the role of the Dacians in the ancient world, considering them members a perfect society, as a civilizing element for the whole of Europe etc. The article The article deconstructs some of the central arguments of protochronism, exposes their inconsistency as well as their continuity with old fashioned ideas promoted during the second half of the 19-th century (Cezar Bolliac, Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu), ideas that reached their apex in the early 20th century through the work of Nicolae Densușianu, "Dacia preistorică" (1913), and warns on the potential danger generated by this protochronist movement.
