Summary/Abstract: Since the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, theological and missiological discourse has focused on the role and missionary nature of the Church in the contemporary world. Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Pope Francis – drawing inspiration from the CELAM conference in Aparecida—introduced the whole Church an intriguing neologism: disciple-missionary. While these terms are firmly rooted in biblical and ecclesiastical tradition, they are intended as an impetus to re-evaluate the current missionary state of the faithful and to make all the baptized aware of their responsibility for their Christian identity and its subsequent obligations. The central issue concerns who become a missionary disciple and when, as well as the nature of the obligations and potential adversaries they face. Should a missionary disciple confront the challenges of the “new Areopagus”? While many questions arise, the primary focus remains on missiological reflection and the resulting conclusions and suggestions.
