Summary/Abstract: The work of missionaries of the Society of Jesus, carried out as part of the evangelization project of Jesuit reductions in Latin America, focused on the promotion of faith and Christian culture, although the theme of suffering (spiritual and physical) was one of the important elements of preaching. This subject was discussed in catechetical and homiletical teaching, as well as stressed during Lent and the Holy Week liturgy. Noteworthy is the skillful and effective referral of Jesuit missionaries to art, music and singing, to show the depth of the saving suffering of Jesus Christ and Mary, and at the same time to involve the Indians in the intense experience of these truths. Many of the then liturgical and non-liturgical traditions have survived to the present day as exemplified by the sermones in Bolivia. Missionaries and Indians were also confronted with physical suffering, the source of which were frequent wars, ailments and diseases. The aspect of suffering appears also in the context of corporal punishment used at the time, treated as one of the educational and disciplinary elements.
