Summary/Abstract: Our article aims to identify the connections between the historical eras of Rome and the way the Romans conceived their law. Starting from a collection of ancient customs, the concept of law had to be developed over the centuries to adapt it to numerous political, economic, and cultural changes and challenges, in such a way that the antithesis between conservatism and pragmatism, both characteristic of the Romans, was overcome in the classical era. Once the emperor had concentrated all political power, the law gradually became again a set of norms – a paradigm taken up by modernity.
