Summary/Abstract: The musical art of the Republic of Moldova is an important part of the world’s cultural heritage. This article is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of genre in the works of Moldovan composers from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. One of the manifestations of the “mixed” genre in contemporary music is the practice of restoring ancient genre systems or “reconstructing” genres. One of the most vivid examples of the ancient genres revival in contemporary Moldovan music is B. Dubossarsky’s “Capriccio on Jewish Themes” for trumpet (trombone) and chamber orchestra. In this composition, examples of genre “reconstruction” can be found at different levels: on the one hand, it is the “restoration” of ancient genres of European music, such as capriccio, and, on the other hand, genres from Jewish folklore— nigun, freylakhs, Jewish doina, etc. Therefore, in B. Dubossarsky’s “Capriccio on Jewish Themes”, the technique of genre reconstruction, which is simultaneously used at different levels, becomes the basis of the composition’s dramaturgy and reflects the semiotic function of “memory of culture”. The introduction discusses the relevance of the topic, the research apparatus, and the terminological basis of the study. The main section defines the concept of genre reconstruction, provides a brief overview of the works of contemporary Moldovan composers operating with this technique, and conducts a comprehensive analysis of Boris Dubossarsky’s “Capriccio on Jewish Themes” for trumpet (trombone) and chamber orchestra from the point of view of ancient genre recreation. In the conclusions, findings about the implementation of the semiotic function of “memory of culture” in this composition are being revealed.
