Summary/Abstract: Arabic versology (ᶜarūḍ) emerged in Basra in the eighth century. Its creator, Al-Ḫalīl Ibn Aḥmad al-Farāhīdī, was one of the pillars of the local school of grammarians. He approached his work on the theory of verse with the analytical meticulousness typical of scholars in that milieu. As the subject of his prosodic analysis, he chose the written text. This article shows that a side effect of this approach is redundancy in the Arabic description of the verse structure. It also demonstrates the extent of this phenomenon, which is still present in Arabic versology.
