Summary/Abstract: This article aims to determine what secondary school students learn about Polish rural life in the 20th-century by examining the latest editions of textbooks for the basic and extended grade III and IV core curricula. The author analysed the substantive content (original materials and supplementary texts) and teaching framework. The basic knowledge presented in textbooks from different publishers is comparable. However, it is not sufficient for students to understand the process of change taking place in the Polish countryside in the 20th century. This means that the concept of teaching history based on a chronological and event-based arrangement should be revised. However, this would necessitate the development of a new concept of historical education based on a modified and shortened core curriculum.
