Between Death and Immortality: “Death in Brunate” and the Mechanisms of Mythologization

Summary/Abstract: This text is a review of Emil Dimitrov’s latest study – “Death in Brunate”: a monograph dedicated to the mechanisms in the mythologizing of the Pencho Slaveikov’s death and its transformation into a key element of the poet’s cultural and historical figure. The analysis focuses on the methodological framework of the study, described by the author himself as “inclusive literary studies” – a method that does not reject the biographical fate of the artist as a key to interpreting his work and cultural presence. Particular attention is paid to the rich documentary base of the work, composed of archival materials, letters, memoirs, periodicals and visual sources. The review emphasizes the book’s contribution to contemporary Bulgarian philological science, carried out through an analytical interdisciplinary approach combining literary studies, historiography and cultural anthropology. The main semantic cores of the study are outlined, with a primary focus on the way in which the author sheds light on the mechanisms of mythologizing and shows how the poet’s death functions simultaneously as an interpretative key to his work, as a supreme embodiment of his poetic quests, but also as a basis for building a sustainable literary and cultural myth around the figure of the poet in both the Bulgarian and European contexts.
