Associations between the family structure and the risk of social-emotional difficulties in early childhood

Summary/Abstract: The aim of our study is to investigate how family structure is related to the risk of social-emotional difficulties in early childhood. The variable measuring family structure measures not only whether a child is raised by one or two parents, or whether the family is intact or a stepfamily, but also whether the child has half- or step siblings. The data come from the Cohort ’18 Growing Up in Hungary study. Bivariate analyses, and baseline model controlling with demographic data on mother and child, indicate higher social-emotional risk in different types of non-intact families than in intact families. However, further analyses show that these can be explained by the less favourable social status of non-intact families, and other relevant characteristics (e.g., conflict between parents, mental health of the mother, spatial location of residence).
