Summary/Abstract: European Union (EU) legislation on chemicals and pesticides aims to protect human health and the environment, as well as to provide a coherent framework for trade. The main legislative instruments, such as the REACH Regulation and the CLP Regulation, establish strict procedures for the registration, evaluation, authorisation and classification of potentially hazardous substances, together with measures to inform and protect consumers and workers. In addition, the legislation includes mechanisms to regulate the import and export of hazardous chemicals, the control of major accidents and the sustainable use of pesticides. In the context of the European Green Deal and its associated strategies (Strategy for Sustainable Chemicals, Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategy), the EU is stepping up its efforts to review and strengthen the legislative framework, with a view to reducing risks to health and the environment and achieving the goal of zero pollution. The European Parliament’s role remains essential in promoting high standards of safety and transparency, while supporting innovation and economic competitiveness.
