Summary/Abstract: This article examines the possibilities for the formation of mathematical competencies in the primary grades (grades 1–4) through the systematic application of mathematical modeling in education. A conceptual framework of modeling is presented as a process that includes the analysis of a problem situation, the creation of a mathematical model, the interpretation of the results and their verification in the context of the initial problem. The main types of models suitable for the initial stage are derived – subject, graphic, schematic and symbolic – and their role in building key competencies is traced: logical thinking, problem-solving skills, functional literacy and argumentation skills. Methodological guidelines for integrating modeling into classroom activities are presented.
