Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the travel notes of Alexander Vasilyevich Eliseev, a Russian scientist and traveler. He was well known in his homeland at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. He was the author of a number of scientific and popular science publications, of which the main work is “Around the World” in four volumes. This article examines those fragments of this work that are devoted to Eliseev's travels in Egypt, Rocky Arabia and Palestine in the 1880s. The author examines the impressions of a Russian traveler regarding unfamiliar environment, in which the memoirist encountered a different culture in the broadest sense of the word, a different religion, a different language. His text is imbued with sympathy for the local population and indignation against Western military and cultural expansion in the Middle East. The memoir talks about the author's meetings with local residents, Russian Orthodox pilgrims and such important people as the church leader and scientist Archimandrite Antonin, head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. A. V. Eliseev was not a pilgrim, like most Russians, traveling to the Middle East, he was a scientist and traveler, so his memoirs reflect not religious experiences, but the details of his travels and discoveries, the daily life of the countries he visited. The article analyzes the events and phenomena that helped the author of the memoirs to form and define his identity in a foreign environment — meetings with compatriots, material and nonmaterial markers of national identity.
